Our commitment to diversity and inclusivity

An intention of the Marine Robotics & Remote Sensing (MaRRS) Lab is to build an inclusive community. We value having a breadth of experiences and perspectives contributing to our lab’s work and community, therefore it is our intention to create an inclusive space for all people to join, contribute, and feel valued. Every member of our lab shares the responsibility to uphold this intention in the following ways:

(1) Respect, encourage and support all members of our MaRRS lab community.
(2) Actively promote an inclusive environment within the Duke University Marine Lab and across the wider academic community.
(3) Work within our local and regional communities to elevate opportunities for historically marginalized groups to pursue higher education at all levels.

MaRRS Lab Code of Conduct

Each member of our lab commits to a Code of Conduct, and we expect the same of our colleagues and collaborators. Adhering to these principles fosters strong and long-lasting partnerships beneficial to all.

No tolerance for prejudice – We do not condone bigotry of any type, including (but not limited to) racism, sexism, religious hostility, homophobic and transphobic behavior. The MaRRS Lab is committed to providing a workplace free from discrimination and harassment without regard to age, ancestry, disability (physical or mental), national or ethnic origin, race, religious belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, political belief, citizenship, veteran status, or any other basis prohibited by law. Such actions will result in a formal reporting to the appropriate administrative group and may result in expulsion from the lab or a cessation of future collaborative activities.

Scientific integrity – We conduct and advocate for good science, driven by academic integrity, personal honesty and constant consideration for our colleagues and collaborators across all stages of their careers.

Communication is key – We believe the success of all academic relationships is rooted in clear expectations and open dialogue. We strive to uphold a culture and climate that fosters trust and encourages honest and respectful communication between all members and our associates.

Collaboration is critical – We believe that diverse perspectives and skills add value to our workspace and the pursuit of scientific knowledge at large. . We welcome members and collaborators from all backgrounds and, acknowledging the finite scope of our small lab group, we encourage and support engagement with collaborators and mentors from a variety of backgrounds and affiliations.
