Behavioral Ecology

Surface behavior of large whales

Aerial video provides new perspectives on quatifying surface behaviors of marine predators

INSOMNIA

Integrative studies of minke whale behavior

The INtegrative Studies Of MiNkes In Antarctica (INSOMNIA) team is working in the Antarctic Peninsula region to collect behavioral data on minke whales in relation to sea ice conditions and prey presence and density. Using drones, we’ve captured 30 hours of contextual video of minke whale behaviour, and 11500 hectares of ice mapping coverage. As a side project, we have also collected drone-based photogrammetric data on over 50 minke whales.
